政治伊斯蘭與新興中產階級(較邊緣與次主流的一群)的結合在土耳其是一種新的現象,因為在1980s年代以前,intellectual = westernized,因而Islam + middle-class + political movement是一種至Kemalism以降前所未有的組合。 這組合背後的政經發展如下概述。

  • rapid urbanization (policy more important than market)
  • impersonal bureaucratic clientalist policy-making class issues taken care of by a welfare state
  • Secularization of Education and Religion

1980s the collapse of ISI and encroachment of neo-liberalism

  • Motherland Party of Ozal
  •  ‘Free Market’
  •  ‘Opening for Islamic politics’
  •  ‘Domestication of Islamic education’

1980s~ Corrupted Neo-liberalism vs. Islamic Capitalism: Islamic middle-class vs. Secularist elite

  • highly personalized, dominant prime ministry
  • weakened trade-union and class struggle
  • decentralized, smaller-scale, self-employement entrepreneurship
  • domestic, artisanal, familial type of multi-layered subcontracted industry
  • exploitation of women and children in labor market
  • State Corruption + Particularistic state intervention + Neo-Liberalism
  1. Kemalist central Elites — New Islamic Middle Class
  2. Neo-liberalist patronclientship — peripheral emerging small entrepreneurship
  3. ‘corrupted secularism’ ‘rentier’ culture — Islamic liberalism, egalitarian Islamic capitalism
  4. social democracy — politics of identity
  5. Welfare was successful in big cities in the 1990s

A technology of disciplinary governance of neo-liberalism re-claim of state authority in the tide of Islamization a continuation of an older secularism of a secularized public sphere free of any ‘primordial’ affiliation composed of ‘rational individuals’
