Rather than Rama’s heroic epic, Ramayana is the saddest thing that could ever happen to a strong woman. But instead of loathing Hinduism’s misogyny, I actually found Sita’s being admirable, when she refused to be fleet like a thief, given the cultural constraints. Unlike in Javanese version’s ending where she survived the test of chastity, she asks Mother Earth for her own ending, for she could no longer bear any further frustration in this world. So no, Haraway, I’d rather be a goddess than a cyborg. There is always an ending–everybody gets one. I will choose my own and be faithful to it.
