Nationalism is not sewn of one cloth. However much some Western theories imply otherwise, religious ideals have played a key role in many twentieth-century nationalisms, including those of Western Europe. Nowhere has the weave of religious ideals into the nationalist cloth been more fiercely debated, however, than in the Muslim world. For more than a century Muslims have struggled with the question of how to accommodate Muslim politics to nationhood and citizenship.
