Up to a hundred police are reported to have surrounded the PT Ajinomoto Indonesia factory at Mojokarto, near Surabaya, to protect it from possible attacks by angry Muslims.
About 80% of Indonesia’s 210 million people are Muslims, forbidden to eat pork by religious law.
Family gatherings become more difficult. Food constitutes a basic problem. Converts to Islam can no longer eat pork, so families have to make special dietary arrangements for them when they visit. The eating of pork is considered central to Dayak identity. Many people, when asked why Dayaks have not historically chosen to convert to Islam, claim that it is because they would have been forced to relinquish eating pork.

–Identitas Minahasa: Sebuah Praktik Kuliner
alam kesehariaanya orang Tionghoa sangat dominan makan
daging babi hal ini terlihat dari penjualan daging babi di Pasar Gede
yang jumlahnya jauh lebih banyak dibanding dengan daging yang lain.
Hal ini juga terlihat di Kampung Balong yang memiliki banyak warung

orang Tionghoa kampung Balong mengkonsumsi daging babi disambut
dengan pedagang babi kuah yang setiap hari menjajakan secara

Under various circumstances the Java- nese will eat different insects, such as white ants, cockroaches, locusts, and even the abominable walang sangit, a species of cricket which emits a very foul smell; but of pork they have an undisguised abhorrence, like faithful Mahometan.

Fines or prison possible
The company could be prosecuted for fraud, with officials facing the possibility of fines or prison terms of up to five years.
The nation’s highest religious council, the Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI) revealed last week that PT Ajinomoto’s MSG may have been contaminated and called on the government to take action.
The company, a subsidiary of a Japanese firm, later admitted that it had replaced a beef derivative with the pork derivative bactosoytone in the production process for economic reasons.
The company said it used bactosoytone as a medium to cultivate bacteria that produces enzymes needed to make its MSG.
It said the pork product was only a catalyst and was not present in the flavour enhancer itself.

As three Japanese and four Indonesian officials from PT Ajinomoto Indonesia were arrested by local police, the largest Islamic body in the country admitted that it knew months ago that pork enzymes were being used in the production of the widely used flavour enhancer, monosodium glutamate (MSG). The Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI) uncovered the illegal use of bactosoytone when it began an audit of the company in September 2000.
Due to strict religious beliefs Muslims must only eat halal food, which is certified as free from pig product ingredients. Situated in the largest Muslim country in the world however, the head of MUI, the body that certifies halal food, K.H. Maruf Amin, said that “it did not want to scare the public until it got the facts right.”
Recall initiated and factory sealed
Nevertheless, the health minister has given Ajinomoto three weeks to complete a recall of 3,000 tonnes of MSG products from Indonesian shelves, and the company’s factory and warehouses in East Java have been sealed.
Nadzim Johan, executive secretary of the Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia, explained: “We are in no position to assure the consumers that the products are safe. That is why we want the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry to carry out tests and make the findings public.”
“We are not against Ajinomoto using pig enzymes. But they must inform the public of its contents. The right to choose is with the consumers,” he added.
Muslims in Indonesia have been unknowingly eating pork, with some meat traders in Jakarta accused of sneaking the product into meatballs as a substitute for beef.
The price of beef has gone beyond $10 a kilo (100,000Rp), which is too expensive for the average Indonesian consumer.
Luke Bowen, from the NT Cattlemen’s Association, says reports from Indonesia indicate that at least four people have been arrested for sneaking pork into bakso balls, a traditional dish that is supposed to be a pure beef meatball.
JAKARTA, Indonesia, Jan. 10— Muslim authorities have accused the Ajinomoto Company, a big food concern based in Tokyo, of using pork products forbidden under Muslim law in a popular food seasoning, despite labeling to the contrary. The accusations have added to the country’s simmering religious tensions.
Originally limited in use to Indonesia’s ethnic Chinese community, MSG has gained wide popularity as a seasoning and cooking ingredient the last decade. Ajinomoto’s factory in East Java is the country’s second-largest producer of MSG.
Molasses is the basic ingredient in MSG, but late last month, the Indonesian Council of Ulemas, an organization of Muslim clerics, said Ajinomoto had replaced a protein derived from cows used in the production process with another that comes from pork fat. The protein is used to cultivate bacteria whose enzymes catalyze production. Government scientists confirmed this week that no pork-related residues were present in Ajinomoto’s MSG.
The news of the discovery caused massive protests in Jakarta and other Indonesian cities.
Foods containing ingredients such as gelatine, enzymes, emulsifiers, etc. are doubtful and questionable (Mashbooh) because the origin of these ingredients is not clearly identified with the symbol.
An MSG plant got a harsh warning with possibility to be closed down since it changed one ingredient in its production process, i.e. enzyme used in mollases fermenattion, since it is produced from porcine in order to cut production cost. Thus, I believe that the Ajinomoto is put not as Halal, but put as doubtful and questionable (Mashbooh).

The US company produces Bacto-Soytone by breaking down
soyabean protein with the help of an enzyme derived
from pork. This enzyme works only as a catalyst,
therefore it will not be found in Bacto-Soytone
itself. How the medium somehow connects to MSG
(AJI-NO-MOTO) can be explained this way:
PT Ajinomoto Indonesia uses bacteria to ferment sugar
cane molasses in order to produce glutamic acid.
Before the bacteria used in the fermentation process,
it has to be kept in the medium that provides
nutrition so as to keep it alive.
Bacteria is then separated from the medium by a
special apparatus. This is done in a special
Only bacteria goes into the fermentation process. The
medium would have been removed.
The fermentation process produces glutamic acid.
Neutralisation turns into monosodium glutamate.
Sterilisation and purification processes make sure
that no other substance except MSG is obtained. Thus,
there is no trace of bacteria here.
